Travelling around Bristol: An insider guide

If you’re planning a visit to Bristol, you’ll probably want to take in as many of the different neighbourhoods and things to do as possible. We’ve put together a handy guide of how to get around, to make the most of your time in the city:

By bus
The easiest way to get between the different neighbourhoods, from the heights of Clifton to the foodie heaven of the harbourside, is by bus. FirstGroup operate the main bus service, and you can check routes, plan your journey and buy tickets using their handy FirstBus app, or by visiting their website.
You can also use the bus for day trips to nearby attractions such as Cheddar Gorge, Wells and Glastonbury.

By train
Bristol has 2 main train stations, Bristol Temple Meads which is located near the centre of the city and Bristol Parkway, another large station slightly outside of the city to the north. In under an hour you can visit nearby towns and cities like Bath, Cardiff and Exeter by train.

By bike
If you’re more of the active type, Bristol is a cycle-friendly city so you can take advantage of the many cycle paths. The city also has a cycle share scheme run by Yobike. You can find one of the bright yellow bikes dotted around the city. To use, just download the app, scan the QR code and off you go, £1 gets you 60 mins worth of cycle time. Alternatively, if you’re looking to go further afield there are lots of places to hire bikes for the whole day.

Airport travel
If you’re flying in or out of the city there are a few different ways to get to and from the airport. Probably the most cost-effective way, especially if you’re travelling alone, is the Bristol Flyer. This bus runs from Bristol’s bus station and passed Temple Meads railway station before arriving at the airport. The main alternative to the Flyer is a taxi see below.

As in most cities, there are many taxi companies available and in recent years Bristol has also welcomed on-demand services like Uber, Ola and Addison Lee. For taxi’s, you can either hail one of the Bristol blue hackney carriages or book a private hire.
