Bristol – What a city!
Bristol is a city packed with things to do and wonderful places to see. Bristol is both a modern urban hub and a time machine to the past. You’ll discover it is rich in cultural experiences and has many enchanting stories from centuries lost if you know where to look. Walk down the cobbled high streets, and you’ll be amazed at what you discover around every corner. Or step inside a refurbished, redesigned warehouse and you’ll uncover heart-pumping entertainment.
Check out the Bristol’s restaurants, and you’ll find that delicious delights await you behind every door. Bristol is a place for the passionate, the artistic, the unique and the inspiring. Its beauty and vigour are the secret recipes for well-known plays, pieces of art, movies and music.
In the past, Bristol was built around the journeys and lives of sailors and captains. Today, the city looks to the future with commitments to an eco-friendly environment, a push for fitness and a clash of countless cultural festivals. Whether you’re heading here for a weekend or a week-long getaway, Bristol is a place you won’t want to leave.
If you want the best view in town make sure you visit Clifton Suspension Bridge, the centrepiece of this district. Walking or cycling, you’ll get a picturesque perspective of the Avon Gorge, a natural wonder that meanders across 1.5 miles! Free to travel, the view of the city from the bridge at sunset is particularly breath-taking. While many tourists will be drawn to the bridge, Clifton has much more to offer. Architecture enthusiasts will gaze up in wonder at the eclectic variety of buildings here, and you’ll always be able to find a great place for a heart-warming cup of coffee. You can wander in, and out of niche, little shops dotted around the streets too and don’t forget to visit Bristol Zoo Gardens where you can discover 400 species of exotic animals.
Bristol City Centre & Old City
You can’t visit Bristol without exploring it’s beating hub, home to dishes sure to tantalise those taste buds and shops impossible to resist. If you don’t get lost in a grand shopping centre, Cabot Circus that boasts one of the largest offerings of products in the UK, you’re sure to find yourself lavishing in luxury in Harvey Nichols. This is just a small taste of the diverse shopping experiences you’ll find in the heart of the city. Between filling those shopping bags, stop in for a great cup at one of the fifty cafes or a world-class restaurant for a fantastic meal. In the evening, you’ll also find some exciting entertainment options and don’t forget to visit the Christmas Steps Art Quarter. Journey back to the 1600’s as you walk across the Stepped Lane Christmas Steps. Surrounding this area, you’ll find seven streets filled with niche shops, art studios, pubs theatres and creative outlets.
Bristol’s past is submerged in maritime history, and you can find remnants of this here. You can still spend an afternoon gazing at the ships sailing by, but the harbour is also now home to modern delights as well. Bordering the harbour, you’ll discover restaurants and bars, perfect for an ice-cold treat on a summer’s afternoon. If you’re feeling adventurous, it’s here that you’ll also find plenty of aqua activities from rowing to paddle boarding. Your journey around the harbour will likely begin at Millennium Square. It’s a great place to catch a movie, visit a museum, discover colourful sea creatures or gaze at modern art in the wonderous Spike Island.
Old Market, Temple Meads & Redcliffe
If you want to dive deeper into Bristol’s history, make sure you visit the unconventional and extraordinary Old Market. This road used to be travelled by weary feet all the way to London. Now, you can discover buildings frozen in time from every century.
The journey to the past continues when you visit Temple Meads Railway Station. Nestled in the middle of a growing modern hub for business and innovation, the station is an incredible piece of architecture. Designed, by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the front of this building is nothing short of mesmerising.
Or, take a walk around the other side of the harbour to Redcliffe, home to the gothic beauty, St Mary Redcliffe Church. Constructed over eight centuries ago, the church was favoured by Elizabeth I and is a must-see for tourists.
Regardless of when you choose to visit Stokes Croft, there will always be a new exciting exhibition waiting for you. Filled with studios and unique shops you won’t find anywhere in the world; Stokes Croft is the place you must explore to submerge yourself in the culture of the city.
Finally, make sure you take a stroll down Gloucester Road. Here you’ll find cafes, bars, salons, restaurants, all enclosed in colourful, quaint buildings. The longest street for independent shops in Europe, Gloucester Road is a prime example of what makes Bristol such a unique place to visit.
