Tower Bridge Visitor Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go!

Whether it’s your first time in London or your tenth, Tower Bridge never fails to impress!
One of the city’s most recognised and photographed landmarks, it blends Victorian engineering with breathtaking views of the River Thames and the capital’s ever-evolving skyline. Located in the heart of historic London, Tower Bridge isn’t just something to see—it’s something to experience.
If you're staying at one of our Your Apartment – City of London locations, you’re in the ideal spot to explore Tower Bridge and the surrounding area. Many of our apartments in Monument, Liverpool Street, and nearby East London are within walking distance or just a few stops away by tube, putting this iconic attraction practically on your doorstep.

Where History Meets the Thames
Tower Bridge opened in 1894 after eight years of construction, built to solve the problem of getting people across the river without stopping busy cargo ships from accessing the Port of London.
Designed with two massive moveable roadways (called bascules) and clad in Victorian Gothic style to match the nearby Tower of London, it’s as beautiful as it is functional.
Even today, the bridge opens regularly for passing vessels—a spectacular sight and a reminder of its original purpose.

Getting There Without the Hassle
If you’re staying with us in the City, you’re perfectly placed.
From Monument, it’s a scenic 10–15 minute walk along the Thames. Coming from Liverpool Street? The Circle or District line will get you to Tower Hill in minutes.
Prefer to walk? Stroll through Aldgate or along the riverside for some bonus sightseeing. Tower Bridge is also well connected by buses and cycling routes, if you’re feeling active.

The Dome: A View Like No Other
The bridge is a stunning sight at any time, but early morning or just before sunset offers the softest light and the fewest tourists—perfect for photos.
If you want to explore more than just the outside, the Tower Bridge Exhibition lets you climb the towers, walk across glass-floored walkways, and dive into the story of its creation.
For an added bonus, check the Bridge Lift times online and try to catch the dramatic moment when the roadways rise.

Not Just a Pretty Bridge
There’s a lot more to see while you're here!
Right next door is the Tower of London, where you can see the Crown Jewels and walk the ancient walls. Or, head across the bridge into Bermondsey, where you’ll find artisan bakeries, independent shops, and galleries.
A 10-minute walk west will take you to Borough Market, one of London’s best foodie destinations. And if you’re in the mood to keep exploring, follow the Thames Path toward Shakespeare’s Globe and the Tate Modern.

Coffee Stops & Foodie Finds
You’re never far from a great coffee or bite to eat around Tower Bridge.
Grab a flat white from White Mulberries in the charming St Katharine Docks marina, or try WatchHouse for seriously good coffee and pastries just off Tower Bridge Road.

Don’t Miss the Night Glow!
While Tower Bridge is spectacular by day, it’s even more magical after dark.
Make your way to Potters Fields Park, a peaceful green space right by the river, where you’ll get picture-perfect views of the bridge all lit up.
It’s a great place to relax with a coffee or picnic—and much quieter than the busy footpaths around the tower itself.
