Tower of London Visitor Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go!

Few landmarks in the world combine royal splendour, gruesome history, and centuries of intrigue quite like the Tower of London.

A symbol of power for nearly a millennium, the Tower has served as a fortress, royal palace, prison, and even a zoo. Today, it stands as one of London’s most iconic and fascinating attractions — and our serviced apartments near Monument put you just a short stroll away from this incredible experience.

Whether you’re visiting for a long weekend or on business with time to explore, a trip to the Tower of London offers an unforgettable journey into British history — complete with dazzling jewels, imposing architecture, and stories that will stay with you long after you leave.

A Brief (and Juicy) History

The Tower of London was founded in the 1070s by William the Conqueror, who wanted to establish dominance over the city and remind the locals who was in charge!

Some of the most dramatic chapters in British history unfolded behind these walls. It’s where Anne Boleyn met her fate, Guy Fawkes was interrogated, and the Princes in the Tower disappeared without a trace.

Today, it’s more about storytelling and spectacle, but you can still feel the weight of the past in every stone.

Getting There

The Tower of London sits on the north bank of the River Thames, right beside the iconic Tower Bridge.

It’s easily accessible via public transport, with Tower Hill Underground station just a couple of minutes’ walk away, served by both the District and Circle lines. You can also reach it from London Bridge station with a scenic walk across the bridge.

If you’re staying in the City of London (like at one of our nearby serviced apartments in the area!), you’ll be just a short stroll from the Tower – ideal for making the most of your day without relying on transport.

What to See While You’re There

The Crown Jewels

The Tower’s sparkling showstopper are The Crown Jewels.

These are the actual ceremonial treasures used by British monarchs, including crowns, sceptres, and orbs so dazzling they need to be seen to be believed.

They’re housed in a heavily guarded vault, but don’t worry – you can get surprisingly close.

Yeoman Warders

Another must-see is the Yeoman Warders, better known as Beefeaters.

These ceremonial guards have become legendary for their entertaining (and often hilarious) tours, which are free with your entry ticket.

Expect stories full of drama, scandal, and the occasional ghost!

Tower Ravens

Then there are the Tower’s famous ravens – large, black birds who live within the walls.

Legend says if the ravens ever leave, the kingdom will fall…

So naturally, they’re treated like VIPs! Each with their own name and even a personal Ravenmaster.

When to Visit and How to Plan

The Tower is open year-round, though hours differ slightly between summer and winter months. In the warmer months, it opens at 9am and closes at 5:30pm, while in winter it shuts a bit earlier. Sundays and Mondays open from 10am regardless of the season.

It’s best to arrive early to beat the queues, especially if you want a clear view of the Crown Jewels.

Tickets can be purchased online in advance, which usually offers a discount and saves you time on the day.

Local Tips to Make the Most of Your Visit

Before heading inside, we recommend grabbing a coffee or breakfast at nearby St. Katharine Docks. It’s just around the corner, but far less hectic than the tourist-heavy spots directly outside the Tower.

After your visit, take a walk across Tower Bridge or along the riverside path for some of the best views of the city.

For the ultimate photo opportunity, head across the river to Potters Fields Park, just beside City Hall. From here, you’ll get sweeping views of the Tower with the Thames in the foreground – perfect for your Instagram grid.
