Discovering Holland Park
Nestled within the elegant surroundings of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Holland Park offers a peaceful retreat from the city’s fast pace.

A Tranquil Escape in the Heart of London
Spanning 54 acres, Holland Park stands as the largest green space in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, where history, culture, and nature blend seamlessly into a uniquely calming retreat. Its location also makes it especially appealing for those staying in nearby Earl's Court apartments, offering residents and visitors alike an easy escape into one of London’s most tranquil and picturesque settings just a short distance from their doorstep.
A Walk Through History
Holland Park stands on land that once formed the grounds of Cope Castle, a grand Jacobean mansion built in the early 17th century by Sir Walter Cope, who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer under King James I. Over time, the estate was renamed Holland House after it passed into the hands of Lady Rich, wife of the Earl of Holland.
The estate’s history carries both grandeur and loss. During World War II, Holland House suffered severe damage from bombing. Today, only parts of the original structure remain. One surviving wing has been repurposed as a youth hostel, while sections of the terrace have found new life as a venue for open air theatre productions and classical music performances during the summer months.

The Kyoto Garden: A Japanese Oasis
One of the park’s most captivating features is the Kyoto Garden, a serene landscape that transports visitors far beyond West London. Donated in 1991 by the Kyoto Chamber of Commerce, the garden was created to celebrate the Japan Festival held in London in 1992.
Designed by a renowned Japanese garden specialist and his team, the Kyoto Garden reflects traditional Japanese design principles. Visitors can wander past tranquil koi ponds, admire carefully placed stone lanterns, and pause by a gentle waterfall that adds to the sense of calm. The garden offers a quiet, reflective space that contrasts beautifully with the surrounding city.

A Hub for Ecology and Learning
Holland Park is not only a place for relaxation but also a centre for environmental awareness. The borough’s Ecology Service is based within the park, supporting conservation efforts and helping visitors engage with the natural world in meaningful ways. This presence reinforces the park’s role as both a recreational and educational space.
Exploring the Surroundings
The park’s central location makes it easily accessible from nearby areas. It is roughly a 16 minute walk from both Notting Hill Gate and Kensington High Street, placing it within easy reach for both locals and tourists.
For those looking to extend their visit, the surrounding neighbourhood offers a variety of attractions.
Dining within the park itself is elevated by Belvedere Restaurant, an elegant venue set inside a former 18th century ballroom. Combining historic charm with modern cuisine, it offers dishes such as grilled seabass and rich soufflés in a truly atmospheric setting. It is the perfect place to pause and indulge after a stroll through the gardens.
Just a short distance away, the Design Museum provides a completely different but equally enriching experience. Known for its focus on contemporary design, the museum features everything from innovative furniture to cutting edge fashion. With a mix of temporary exhibitions and permanent displays, it invites visitors to consider how design influences everyday life.
Holland Park Visiting Times
The park opens daily from 7:30 in the morning until dusk, with closing times varying throughout the year and displayed at each entrance. Visitors should note that some gates may close slightly earlier than the posted time, so it is worth planning ahead to make the most of your visit.
A Timeless London Escape
Holland Park stands as a reminder that even within a bustling metropolis like London, there are spaces that offer stillness, beauty, and a deep connection to history. Whether you come for the peaceful atmosphere of the Kyoto Garden, the elegance of its formal landscapes, or the stories embedded in its past, the park offers an experience that feels both timeless and restorative.
